Its been a couple of weeks that InspYreIT had dealt with a tip and here is the tip article. Most of the computer users including me are scared of installing the Softwares on the default drive where the Operating System is installed. As you increase the amount of software or games thats been installed to the default installation location thats the C: drive mostly, the free space in the drive where the Operating System is resident reduces and so the performance of the PC gets affected. As the default installation drive consists of your Operating System files, Virtual Memory Allocation, Various User files and finally the files of the software and games that you have installed.

One thing you can do to avoid this is by changing the default installation folder that’s every time you install a software install it to another drive where you feel can accommodate your software without any commotion. But still the problem arises that’s every time you install a software or game you have to select the custom installation and change the default drive to the drive you have selected to accommodate your software. Lets see how we can change the default installation drive permanently.

How To Change The Default Installation Drive or Folder

Step1: Click Start and select Run.

Step2: Type "Regedit"  and click OK.

Step3: Locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version

Step4: In the Right Hand Pane you can see ProgramFilesDir.

Step5: Double click on the ProgramFilesDir and change the value of C:\Program Files to X:\Program Files (where X is where you wish make your default directory for installation).

Default Installation Directory

In the image shown above the default installation drive is changed to E:\Program Files.

As on longer go you install all your installed programs on to a separated drive you get a sense of lesser load on the Operating System thereby on to your PC.
